Moderna is solidifying its presence in Japan, particularly at the Shonan Health Innovation Park, a thriving center for biotech innovation. Our Japan Technology Center focuses on advancing mRNA drug substance manufacturing and enzyme production. We are seeking dedicated professionals ready to make a profound impact by leading the cutting-edge development of our facilities​.

This role presents an extraordinary opportunity to lead the design, construction, and operational readiness of Moderna’s state-of-the-art Japan Technology Center. Reporting to the Senior Vice-President of Facilities & Engineering, you will serve as the Head of Engineering, Maintenance, Facility Operations, and Metrology at the Shonan Health Innovation Park. Your efforts will play a vital role in establishing a globally recognized center for mRNA drug substance manufacturing and enzyme production. This position is based in Tokyo and Shonan during the transition from Shinkiba​.

Here’s What You’ll Do

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Leading the design, construction, qualification, and delivery of manufacturing facilities and R&D laboratories.

  • Staffing and developing the Facilities & Engineering organization in line with the operational readiness timeline.

  • Aligning with global networks to implement a reliability-centered maintenance system and ensuring regulatory compliance.

  • Overseeing vendor management and outsourced services while setting maintenance goals​.

Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Driving investigations, CAPAs, regulatory audits, and engineering initiatives while collaborating cross-functionally.

  • Writing, revising, and approving critical documents, including records, procedures, and specifications.

  • Ensuring compliance with Japan’s PMDA and cGMP regulations for facility systems.

  • Playing an active role in the Site Leadership Team to contribute to broader operational success​.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field required.

  • Minimum 15 years of Facilities and/or Engineering experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries required.

  • Minimum 7 years of experience leading a Facilities & Engineering group.

  • This position is site-based, requiring you to be at Moderna’s site full-time. This position is not eligible for remote work.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • Experience in leading engineering organization on Drug Substance or Advance Medicine manufacturing, Fill & Finish Facilities and Single Use Technology would be preferred.

  • Ability to read, write, and understand Japanese and English fluently.
