This position plays a crucial role in supporting maximization of Santen’s pipeline and investment opportunities to support its growth strategy under the guidance provided by the Deputy Head of Innovation Strategy.

This position especially contributes to development and update of Disease Innovation Strategy for assigned target diseases and is responsible for coordinating scientific assessment of external opportunities identified in the respective disease areas through cross-functional collaborations with internal and external stakeholders.

Job Description

  • Play a crucial role in supporting development and update of Disease Innovation Strategy for the assigned diseases by collaborating with cross-functional team:
    • Understanding patient journey, unmet people/medical/business needs, science and technology trend, and competitive landscape
    • Blueprinting the future treatment paradigm, defining intervention points & solutions, and setting Solution Concept for the target solutions
    • Mapping out in-house pipeline and external opportunities with priorities to realize the future treatment paradigm
    • Strategizing establishment of novel biomarkers/clinical endpoints for successful product development
  • Ensure all components of Disease Innovation Strategy are guided by ultimate goal of creating a pipeline of products that meet patient, provider and commercial needs under the detailed guidance provided by the Deputy Head of Innovation Strategy
  • Continually assess gaps and provide strategic insights to Innovation Strategy management for achieving R&D objectives and specifically OIC goals
  • Interact with internal counterparts, i.e., research and clinical development, business development, and corporate strategy function, to facilitate enrichment of the pipeline (in-house and external) in line with the Disease Innovation Strategy
  • Coordinate to scientific assessment of external opportunities in pre-PoC stage and provide scientific assessment reports with proper risk analysis

Qualifications

  • MD, PhD, PharmD, MBA or equivalent degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in pharmaceutical or healthcare industry, especially in R&D function
  • Experiences to work on strategic planning with cross-functional matrix teams to achieve critical business objectives in R&D function
  • Project management skills and the ability to effectively juggle priorities / issues and ensure on-time delivery
  • Experience participating to due diligence on product opportunities; experience of preparation and presentation of reports to senior management preferred
  • Business sense with ability to link the scientific and business needs
  • Ophthalmology experience is preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, self-motivated, innovative, with highest level of professional ethics, accountability and integrity
  • Broad understanding of general drug discovery and development processes, including regulatory requirements is preferred
  • Fluent or native level of both Japanese and English language skills
