The Business Development Director’s primary responsibility is to lead, plan and oversee business development for Japan in a global context. This means that the incumbent will be responsible for bringing business to and from Japan for Clinigen.

Major Tasks & Activities:

Business Development

  • Identify opportunities for product and company acquisition’s and engaging with brokers/companies to nurture opportunity through to agreement.
  • Identify opportunities for strategic partnerships to commercialize medicines inside and outside Japan with Clinigen becoming the market authorization holder (MAH).
  • Act as key contact with strategic partners and companies through legal agreement and ensure a smooth handover to the project manager.
  • Work with key internal stakeholders to ensure that all necessary due diligence has been conducted on opportunities to identify all risks and potential upsides.
  • Lead contract development negotiations with partners to maximize ROI.

Partner relationship management

  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with partner companies/suppliers
  • Attend partner meetings and product training (as required).
  • Identify opportunities for new business through partner relationships
  • Take responsibility for assigned partner communications
  • Responsibility for wholesaler / partner agreements and ensure conditions are being adhered to
  • Support the team with partner company business plan development and marketing material
  • Ensure partner reporting of sales where required

Customer relationship management

  • Develop and leverage professional relationships with key customers, KOLs, patient advocacy groups and other key stakeholders relevant to the business
  • Provide feedback to partners with customer intel as required
  • Represent the organisation in negotiations, at conferences, seminars and official occasions

Administration

  • Manage the Commercial, Regulatory, BD and Medical finances and input into the budget planning process and approve costs and expenses within limit.
  • Ensure filing and documentation is compliant with standard processes and formats
  • Complete required reports within designated timeframes (e.g. monthly sales report)
  • Participate in meetings as needed
  • Liaise with senior management and staff to ensure projects are conducted efficiently
  • Communicate with staff & management using proper channels
  • Oversee workload and priorities of the Commercial, Regulatory, BD and Medical teams to meet company objectives and legislative timeframes. Proactively inform line manager(s) of any conflicts or delays in projects.

Technical Expertise and Compliance

  • Maintain a current and comprehensive knowledge of the regulatory environment, including specific regulations and associated guidelines, apply this knowledge in day-to-day activities
  • Maintain a current and comprehensive knowledge of Clinigen, competitors and the local healthcare environment
  • Attend relevant industry conferences to expand knowledge of relevant therapeutic areas
  • Understand the issues affecting the customers who prescribe our products and patients who use them
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, cutting-edge practices and techniques, current publications, regulations, etc.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Japan related standards
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the Group’s Quality Management System and Policies and ensure compliance at all times
  • Ensure Company related activities comply with relevant Acts, legal demands and ethical standards.

Requirements

  • 10+ years’ experience in healthcare environment
  • 5+ years management/supervisory experience
  • Tertiary qualification in science, business or related field is desirable
  • Budget & P&L management experience
  • Knowledge of Japan regulatory framework
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, professional regulations and codes of conduct
  • Experience in market and asset analysis relating to medicines
  • Outstanding influencing and negotiation skills employed at all levels of the organization, including senior leadership
  • Product knowledge
  • Knowledge of GVP, GMP, GDP & ISO9001
  • Understanding of Japan reimbursement mechanisms
