Japan Ship Finance Broker

Job Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Shipping Finance Broker to join our team in Tokyo. Our client is a major international ship owner with a diverse fleet, including bulk and oil carriers built in Japan and chartered to Japanese and international operators. As a Shipping Finance Broker / Japan MD, you will act as the vital intermediary between our ship owners, charterers, and financial institutions, facilitating the financing of shipping operations. You will be responsible for negotiating loan terms, securing financing for vessel purchases, and managing the financial aspects of ship charters. This role is essential for bridging the gap between the shipping industry and the financial market to secure the necessary funding for maritime activities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Negotiate and structure financing deals for vessel acquisitions and shipping operations, ensuring favorable terms for our ship owners and long term relationships with our ship builders and financial partners.
• Act as the primary point of contact between ship owners, charterers, and financial institutions.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including Japanese shipyards, trading companies, and financial institutions.
• Provide expert advice on shipping finance products and tailor solutions to meet the specific needs of clients, especially our ship owners.
• Conduct market analysis and stay informed on industry trends to offer timely and effective financing solutions.
• Assist clients in navigating complex financial regulations and ensure compliance with maritime financing laws and policies.
• Prepare detailed financial proposals, presentations, and reports for clients and internal teams.
• Coordinate with legal teams to ensure smooth execution of financing agreements.
• Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the shipping industry and financial market developments.

Qualifications:

• Bachelors degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
• Fluency in both Japanese and Business English (written and spoken) is mandatory.
• Proven experience in Japanese shipping finance or a related field such as banking, finance, or maritime operations or ship broking.
• Strong knowledge of the shipping industry, vessel financing, and financial products related to maritime operations.
• Experience as a ship broker, commercial manager in a trading house, and in finance is highly preferred.
• Strong knowledge of Japanese trading houses and Japanese financial institutions is essential.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with ship owners, charterers, and financial institutions.
• Previous experience working with Japanese shipyards, trading companies, and financial institutions is highly preferred.
• Strong negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Attention to detail and a high level of professionalism in all aspects of the job.

Experience:

Deal owning experience within a major trading company or ship brokerage, managing and overseeing large-scale vessel sale and purchase transactions.

Proven track record in structuring and closing sale, purchase, and charter-back deals for various vessel types, including large container carriers and VLGCs.

Additional Preferred Skills and Attributes:

Established connections with Japanese major banks, ship owners, and trading houses, as well as key players in the broader maritime industry.

Experience managing large fleets, achieving significant profits, and overseeing strategic restructuring and disposal projects.

In-depth involvement in the financing, marketing, and negotiation of new ship investments, including high-value transactions and large-scale chartering projects.
