Job Purpose

Legal Counsel is an integral provides core legal support for Donaldson’s vertical businesses and supporting functions across the Asia Pacific region. Area of principal focus will be Japan, with additional coverage of vertical businesses in Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Australia, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam as needed (collectively, "Region").

Key Accountabilities

  • Works closely with business partners and functions and potentially external counsels throughout the Region to identify, analyze, propose, implement, and execute strategic and practical legal and business solutions to issues across a broad range of matters.
  • Works with vertical businesses and external counsels to structure, draft, negotiate and implement complex commercial transactions with customers, vendors, distributors, and other commercial parties in the Region, and require experience and versatility in dealing with IP, licensing, sales, competition, advertising/marketing, privacy, corporate and other compliance/operations related issues.
  • Manages external counsels and provide solutions to disputes in the Region, including legal negotiation, litigation, arbitration, and mediation processes.
  • Manages risks of the company in the Region by enhancing specific processes and providing periodic training on a variety of legal topic including contracts, anti-trust & competition, advertisement & claims making, etc.
  • Collaborates with various supporting functions on a regular basis, including legal, finance, marketing, HR, IT, CSC, business process, internal audit, etc.
  • Works closely with Donaldson global legal group and carries out international projects and assignments.
  • Manages corporate secretarial matters for the country of Japan, and potentially others in the Region.

Key Qualifications & Requirements

Education Qualification:

  • JD/LLB/LLM degree or equivalent
  • Law school graduates (Preferred, Not manadatory to have)

Professional Competence & Skills:

  • Japan Bar qualification (Preferred, Not manadatory to have)
  • Excellent office software skills, including MS Word/Excel/Outlook, etc

Leadership Competence:

  • Ability to comfortably work with and support regional business leaders
  • Ability to work as sole counsel for businesses in country/region

Relevant Experience:

  • More than 6 years of legal service experience in law firms or muti-national corporations
  • Sole counsel experience preferred
  • Manufacturing industry experience preferred

Others:

  • Fluent in Japanese
  • Excellent English skills, both in writing & oral
  • Open to travel within APAC region and occasionally to US/EMEA
